| According to Webster’s, natural means pertaining to nature; unaffected;
easy. It also says; to be expected. Nature is defined as, (1) everything not manmade.
In cosmetic and personal care products, as well as many other areas, the words “natural” and
“all natural”, mean different things to different people. The part of the definition “to be
expected”, has come to have great discrepancies and in many instances, allow manufacturers
to put out products that are not what was expected, much less hoped for.
In manufacturing cosmetic products, we believe that natural should mean a product as
close to natural and nature, using ingredients that are as natural as possible, in as close
to original form as is feasible, effective and actually possible. So many say that they are
“all natural”, is it possible that they are? To beware means to be cautious and that is the
operative word.
“Botanical Essenced Shampoo” (No botanical, no essence), they are allowed to say that it
is “Natural”. Vitamin E can be called natural and some vitamin E is obtained by vacuum
distillation of edible vegetable oils, particularly soy. Another Vitamin E that is used in
many products, including as an oral vitamin E in supplement form is from petroleum. They can
say “natural”. Uranium is natural, poison ivy is natural. What if the base ingredients were
a piece of coal and a coconut, many molecular changes ago?
Natural is about Choices
- Choose organic or wild crafted, as found in nature over
chemicals, petrochemicals, pesticides and synthetics. Using the highest quality plants and
herbs obtained for quality and potency and freshness over the standard stock (often
irradiated), for less cost. Using the highest quality extracts, properly extracted, never
using toxic solvents.
- Choose botanical before synthetic and artificial fragrances.
Plant and earth pigments over synthetic, toxic colors so commonly used, even though they
are easier to work with and so much less expensive.
- Choose the reusable and recyclable over the disposable.
- Choose plant over chemical.
- Choose to never be involved in Animal Testing- Never- Ever
